Nos summer abroad program invites students to spend 3 weeks in Seville. Participants engage in a comprehensive course that combines classroom learning with practical application in real-life situations. After classes, you’ll stroll past ancient Roman ruins, wander through narrow streets influenced by Moorish architecture, and relax by the riverside where ships once departed for distant lands. And each evening, you’ll return to your host family, having experienced over 2,000 years of history in just one day. With its reputation for bringing people together from all corners of the globe, Sevilla beckons you to become part of its fascinating story. Seville serves as the administrative center of Andalusia, Spain’s most populous region. It has evolved into a vital transportation nexus to the wider world via road, rail, and air routes. However, Seville owes much of its allure to its vibrant cultural fabric. Andalusia is the region whose traditions are most synonymous with Spain on an international level, and Sevilla is the spiritual home for many of these traditions. One finds a rich tapestry of Flamenco music, equestrian arts, the lively Feria, the convivial tapas culture, Sevillanas dance, and, controversially, the customs of bullfighting. Seville effortlessly captivates students with its labyrinthine alleys, cobblestone streets, Moorish gardens, Catholic cathedral, shaded squares, and soaring bridges. They are drawn by its affordability, vibrant nightlife, architectural splendor, and countless pockets of ineffable beauty.
The perfect starting point for this list is the largest Gothic cathedral globally. Erected in the 12th century, the Seville Cathedral, which also serves as the final resting place of Christopher Columbus, leaves visitors equally astosnished by its interior and exterior. Boasting a colossal central nave and 80 side chapels, it houses an impressive array of religious artwork, iconography, carvings, and architectural features, solidifying its well-deserved status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
And adjoining the side of the cathedral is the single most iconic image of Seville. La Giralda was originally a minaret that formed part of the Moorish mosque prior to the Catholic reconquest in the 12ème century and was converted into a bell tower by the Castilians. It can be seen from all over the city, and if you manage to climb to the top of this 340 feet high tower, some of the best views of the city and surrounding area are your reward.
The Real Alcazar, a 14th-century palace nestled in the city center, is acclaimed for showcasing the most exquisite and authentic examples of Mudejar craftsmanship worldwide. Mudejar, the renowned architectural style closely linked with Andalusia, artfully blends Christian design with Muslim and Jewish craftsmanship.
The Barrio de Santa Cruz, referred to as the “Old Jewish Quarter” by locals, is arguably the most enigmatic neighborhood in Seville. Its maze-like arrangement of cobblestone streets, slender alleyways, and imposing stone structures seems to create a barrier against the modern world, shielding it from its noise and bustle. As you meander through the winding lanes of Santa Cruz in the late afternoon, observing the numerous plaques and carvings that narrate the tales of the neighborhood’s past inhabitants, you may find yourself transported back in time…
This semi-circular structure sits directly opposite the charming Parque de María Luisa and was chosen as a filming location for the film Star Wars among other Hollywood films. Its arching fountain, elegant bridges, elegant moat and cavernous archways will therefore be familiar to many viewers, but what they may not be familiar with is the colorful tiled porticos that line the enormous edifice, each one dedicated to a specific Spanish province. Built as recently as 1928, Plaza de España has become of the Sevilla’s most popular locations for photography.
Established in 1997, the Pablo de Olavide University emerges as one of Spain’s most contemporary educational institutions, evident through its impressive modern facilities. Spanish Culture and Society Program. This course aims to explore, discuss, and comprehend the challenges confronting Spain within the framework of globalization. Topics of focus include the governmental structure and monarchy, nationalism, linguistic and cultural diversity, as well as migration flows , education and healthcare systems, gender dynamics, politics surrounding historical memory, and the shift in production models, heavily influenced by the impact of climate change on the Iberian Peninsula. Summer Abroad program students will undertake this intensive program with a balanced approach to foreign language learning. During 3 weeks, students receive 48 hours of tuition and must complete 42 hours of personal work. with classes lasting four hours in length and taking place from Mondays to Thursday inclusive. The course is available for any university or college level student over the age of 18, with the maximum class size of 22 students.
