Location

Located on the banks of the Guadalquivir River, Sevilla is the capital of Andalusia, Spain’s most populous region. Sevilla stands thanks primarily to its bold cultural identity. Andalusia is the region whose traditions are most synonymous with Spain on an international level, and Sevilla is the spiritual home for many of these traditions. Flamenco music, equestrian schools and horse riding, la Feria, the tapas dining concept, Sevillanas dancing and, for right or for wrong, bullfighting customs are all most prominent among the city’s winding alleyways, cobbled streets, Arabic gardens, Catholic cathedral, shaded plazas and towering bridges. Sevilla has no trouble charming tourists, professionals, writers, politicians, artists and even a Hollywood movie director or two. As you walk around this culturally vibrant, hassle and bassle city, themes common to Spanish literature will inevitably manifest themselves in every sight you see and around every corner you turn. Given Sevilla’s central role in the preserving Spanish culture and traditions, there really is no better place for an AP® Spanish Literature and Culture workshop than here!

The Sevilla Cathedral

The largest Gothic cathedral in the entire world. A giant central nave and 80 side chapels facing it impress visitors on the inside as much as the outside. Constructued in the 12th century, the Cathedral holds an impressive collection of religious artwork, iconography, carvings and features that provides its UNESCO World Heritage Site status.

The Giralda

Adjoining the side of the cathedral is La Giralda. Originally a minaret that formed part of the Moorish mosque prior to the Catholic reconquest in the 12th century, was converted into a bell tower by the Castilians. All together become La Giralada in the single most iconic image of Sevilla. It can be seen from all over the city, and if you manage to climb to the top of this 340 feet high tower, some of the best views of the city and surrounding area are your reward.

The Royal Alcázar

Mudéjar world-famous architectural style elegantly fuses Christian design and Muslim / Jewish craftsmanship. Closely associated with Andalusia, the Real Alcázar, a 14th century palace located in the city center, contains the finest and purest elements of Mudéjar work in the entire world.

Barrio de Santa Cruz

The Barrio de Santa Cruz known as the “Old Jewish Quarter” is possibly the most mysterious neighbourhood in all of Sevilla. This cobbled-streets labyrinth, narrow alleyways and towering stone buildings have a strange way of keeping the rest of the modern world outside. And as you wander the winding streets of Santa Cruz you may well feel yourself stepping back in time…

The Plaza de España

This semi-circular structure sits directly opposite the charming Parque de María Luisa. Built as recently as 1928, Plaza de España has become of the Sevilla’s most popular locations. Arching fountain, elegant bridges, elegant moat and cavernous archways, colorful tiled porticos.

Metropol Parasol

Another location that’s great for photo enthusiasts is the Metropol Parasol, more commonly known by locals as “Las Setas”. The strcuture, resembling to a giant mushroom, is a single largest wooden structure in the entire world. To top of it all, sits on top of the city’s ancient Roman ruins (that are still accessible to visitors), but as the sun begins to set, you’ll want to climb to the top of the Metropol Parasol in order to enjoy some of the finest nighttime views of the whole city.
