It is possible that there is no better place to study in a Spanish immersion course than in Sevilla. The capital of Andalusia (Spain’s most populous region) is a regional transport hub and the spiritual home of many traditions and customs that the international community most closely associates with Spain, such as Flamenco folk music, horse riding and equestrian arts, Sevillanas dancing, la Feria and bullfighting. Such abundant and rich culture contributes to the romance and passion that the Spanish identify with Sevilla, as does the dazzling architecture across that city that represents the various historical eras of its existence. Here, record-breaking, hyper-modern edifices straddle ancient Roman ruins, elegant Moorish bell towers stand next to giant Gothic cathedrals, and the next generation of intellectuals learn from the mistakes of the past inside a former tobacco factory that processed the commodity grown in Spain’s colonies in the Americas that has been converted into a university campus. As such, it is easy to see why Sevilla has always been at the very heart of Spanish culture and history, making it a perfect location for a Spanish immersion course in Spain.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the ideal place to start this list. Constructed in the 12th century on the original site of a mosque built by the Moorish settlers of the city, the Sevilla Cathedral is only a 5 minute walk from the Centro MundoLengua headquarters. It is as visually impressive on the inside as it is on the outside; a giant central nave is lined with 80 individual side chapels, and visitors can enjoy an outstanding collection of ecclesiastical paintings, artworks, carvings and altarpieces, as well as seeing the resting place of Christopher Columbus himself.
Standing tall next to the cathedral is La Giralda, the single sight that makes true Sevillanos feel at home. At 340 feet above ground, it remains the largest structure in Sevilla east of the river. The views that those brave enough to climb to the top see are quite simply breath-taking, yet this bell tower was never originally intended to be part of a Gothic cathedral; it began life as the minaret of the aforementioned mosque that stood on this very site in the 12th century.
The Real Alcázar of Sevilla may be familiar to viewers of the hit television series “Game Of Thrones”. This palatial complex, with its patios, courtyards, fountains, pools, sweet orange trees and resident peacocks was deemed so beautiful that the show’s directors wanted to film here. Indeed, it is not a registered UNESCO World Heritage Site for nothing; it is believed to be the location where the uniquely Andalusian “Mudéjar” architectural style is at its finest.
Sevilla’s labyrinthine Old Jewish Quarter has an incredible ability to allow those who tread within its depths to feel like they are somehow travelling back in time. The noise of modern life (and certainly the traffic!) disappear as you enter Santa Cruz’s maze of cobbled streets, narrow walkways, secluded, sleepy plazas and high walls of solid stone. And every corner that you peer around will inevitably reveal some new delight, be it a delicately tiled Arabic garden, a live Flamenco performance before your very eyes or a solemn plaque of marble or granite that tells the story of one of the many extraordinary inhabitants of this Barrio in the centuries gone by.
Constructed as recently as 1928, the Plaza de España has become one of the most popular of Sevilla’s major landmarks remarkably quickly. It was even chosen as a filming location for one of the Star Wars films! However, as you pass through the divine Parque de María Luisa opposite and the giant semi-circular edifice springs into view, you begin understand its popularity. Its soaring towers, cavernous archways, cool and shaded corridors, low bridges, boating canals, arching fountain and colorful tiled alcoves – each one dedicated to an individual province of Spain – provide an almost endless amount of picturesque photo opportunities.
Known by locals as “Las Setas” thanks to its uncanny resemblance to a giant mushroom, the Metropol Parasol is another of Sevilla’s more modern landmarks. Beneath ground are the crumbling remains of the Roman city that are accessible to the public, but the eyes immediately gravitate up toward the main structure, which is the largest single wooden structure in the entire world. And as the sun begins to set, make sure to climb to the top in order to enjoy the very finest nighttime views available across all Sevilla.
But it doesn’t end there! Sevilla always has something else to offer, including;
